Information About Acne
Acne is a skin condition usually associated with teenagers; however a surprising number of adults -from 10% to 20%- have acne that continues well into their twenties, or occurs for the first time (or recurs), in their thirties and beyond.

The causes of acne are not well understood, but in women fluctuations in estrogen may be an important precipitant. Evidence of this is the fact that many women find that their acne flares up right before and during their menstrual period, when estrogen levels are low. Birth control pills have a variable impact on acne, and some women break out with adult acne when they first start or stop taking them. Low estrogen oral contraceptives may trigger acne for some women. High estrogen oral contraceptives sometimes improve acne but have side effects that limit their usefulness as anti-acne drugs.

TEENAGE ACNE

Teenage acne sufferers often think that a favorite food such as chocolate or pizza for example, can cause acne, but scientific studies have not found a link between specific foods and acne. On the other hand, it is possible to develop a certain food allergy which can manifest itself as acne-like.

WHAT REALLY CAUSES ACNE

Oil producing glands below the surface help lubricate the skin as well as carry dead skin cells to the surface. However when exposed to dirt (or cosmetics) this combination has the undesired effect of plugging up skin pores, thus causing oil and bacteria to accumulate inside. The result is the characteristic blemishes of acne: Blackheads (open comedones) white heads (closed comedones), and pimples.

HOW TO PREVENT AND TREAT ACNE

The most important action to take in preventing acne from occurring or getting worse is to maintain a good skin hygiene. Energetic washing and scrubbing of the skin may cause more harm than good. Instead, is recommended a gentle scrubbing of the skin with a mild, soap-free cleanser in order to maintain skin pores clean and free of debris. The face never should be touched with unwashed hands in order to avoid bacterial contamination.

THE LOGICAL WAY OF REMOVING
    WHITE HEADS AND BLACKHEADS

One important part of treating acne is to physically remove all the existing white heads and blackheads. However, no amount of scrubbing or use of antibiotics will make these lesions disappear. Applying pressure with the fingers, or the use of hard objects may cause these lesions to become irritated or infected. Instead we recommend the use of THE ACNE VAC-PEN, a device that works with gentle pressure around the lesion, while at the same time applying the necessary suction to allow the contents of the white heads and blackheads to be evacuated.
